SSI scientists and engineers have experience using and developing optical measurement techniques, such as infrared spectroscopy and physical vibrations, to elucidate the chemical compositions and/or mechanical properties of materials and their surfaces.
Examples of current efforts in this area include the Fast Imaging NonDesctructive Technique (FINDIT), which is designed to detect and locate heat damage in composite materials via the analysis of the propagation of sound waves through these systems, and recent DoD-funded efforts to characterize discrete material debris.
