Dr. Steven Adler-Golden, 1953-2022
It is with great sadness that SSI announces the passing of our dear friend and colleague Steve Adler-Golden. Steve retired from SSI in September 2021 after 40 years of scientific leadership. Steve was the first employee hired by the company founders back in 1982.  His work at SSI has encompassed almost every aspect of the company over the years.  He co-authored nine patents for a variety of spectroscopic instruments and algorithms.  He provided mentorship...

New President

New President
Bridget Tannian became SSI’s third President on January 4, 2022. Bridget joined the company in 2014  and has been Group Leader for Electro-Optical Imaging and Sensing since 2017. Before coming to SSI, she worked in industry for companies developing algorithms for commercial XRF instruments. Bridget’s vision for the company is to preserve SSI’s collaborative culture and encourage transparency and communication. ...

End of an Era

End of an Era
Robert Sundberg stepped down as President of SSI at the end of December 2021. He remains at SSI as a President Emeritus, Principal Scientist III, and Group Leader for the newly formed Remote Sensing Modeling and Simulation Group. Rob took over as President of SSI from Fritz Bien in December 2011. He has successfully steered SSI through some of our best and most difficult times. He oversaw the transition to 100% ESOP ownership and S-Corporation status. He served...

Steve Richtsmeier Retires

Steve Richtsmeier Retires
In July 2021, Steve Richtsmeier retired from SSI after 37 years.  Steve was a respected scientist at SSI who worked on both development of optical instrumentation and modeling and simulation for remote sensing applications. His signature achievement is MCScene software, the 3-D radiation transport simulation product that produces hyperspectral imagery  of earth as observed through a variety of atmospheric conditions.  MCScene is used by NASA, DOD, and...

Pajo Vujkovic-Cvijin Retires

After 16 years of significant contribution to the company, Pajo Vujkovic-Cvijin retired on November 1, 2020. Pajo brought the Dispersive Transform Spectroscopy (DTS) concept to SSI and with Neil Goldstein, used it to advance SSI’s spectral sensor development program in hyperspectral imaging, eventually expanding into hypertemporal imaging, resulting in over $5M in contract funding. His work culminated with development of the compact CONDOR hyperspectral/hypertemporal...

Larry Bernstein Retires

Larry Bernstein Retires
Larry Bernstein, one of the original five scientists (along with Fritz Bien, Mike Gersh, Dave Robertson, and Jim Elgin), who founded SSI in January of 1981, has retired. He was the last of the 5 still working at SSI! Larry has been a significant influence, mentor, friend and co-worker for over 38 years. Larry was celebrated Hawaiian style on October 29, 2019. Download free synthetic hyperspectral imagery generated by MCScene, SSI’s scene simulation tool

Download free synthetic hyperspectral imagery generated by MCScene, SSI’s scene simulation tool
MCScene synthetic scene data can be a valuable resource for development of retrieval algorithms. Not only is “ground truth” known, because it is built into the simulations, but “atmosphere truth” is known as well. If you are interested in assessing the utility of MCScene simulations, we have assembled a small collection of hyperspectral and multispectral data sets that are available for download from the MCScene page. All data sets include not only...
